When several key-ways are spaced around a hole, the resulting section is a multiple spline cut. This tool is equivalent to a series of keyway broaches combined in one tool, with the cutting teeth spaced around the same tool diameter by indexing the tool. These teeth can be straight sided, involute, helical, spline or a combination.

The involute splines are not possible to obtain in machining but a very best approximation based on the distance between pins for various pin diameter can be obtained.
